Hit Behind the Ball - Bunkers

Bookmark and Share

There is quite a lot of literature on this subject. To summarise the argument for you, it states that you should vary the distance you hit behind the ball for different distances of shot.

For example, hit very close to the ball for long shots and far behind the ball for short shots. I strongly recommend that you ignore this advice.

Here is why:

1. It is difficult to execute because of the precision required. Hitting very close to the ball leaves very little margin for error.

If you hit the ball by mistake, the result will be disastrous. Also when you hit far behind the ball you will lose control of how the ball will react

2. Controlling the spin. When you hit very close to the ball you may inadvertently catch a piece of the ball. When you are hitting down so vertically you can create a lot of backspin. This backspin is impossible to control and you should avoid it at all costs.

On the other hand, when you are hitting the shot very fat, the ball will come out very hot (a pro term which means that the ball runs far when it hits the green).

This technique gives you no control and you should always try to hit 2 inches (5 cm) behind the ball to achieve maximum control.
