Sloping Lies in Bunkers

Bookmark and Share

When your ball comes to rest on a slope in the bunker you must be prepared to adapt to the slope. Go through the following lesson to understand how to master these difficult situations.

Upslopes

A common error is to hit down into the face of the upslope causing the clubface to dig too deeply into the sand.

When this happens you will transfer very little forward momentum to the ball because you are hitting the shot too fat.

To shallow out your divot you must set your body more parallel to the slope. Specifically, set your shoulders parallel to the upslope.

To do this you will have more weight on your right foot and your right shoulder will be lower than your left. From this position you are able to hit your normal shallow bunker shot.

Downslopes

When your ball comes to rest on a downslope, you must take extra care in taking the correct address position.

This shot is impossible to play if you do not follow the instructions given in this lesson.

Because the ball is on a downslope, you must be careful that your angle of attack does not become too shallow.

It is more difficult to get steep on the ball. The danger of being too shallow is that it is easy to catch the ball first.

To steepen your angle of attack you must set your shoulders parallel to the downslope. Lean your weight forward so that your right shoulder becomes higher than your left at address.

The swing motion from this position will be steeper and at impact you should feel that you swing your right arm down the slope.

This combination of address and steep swing motion will allow you to slide the clubhead under the ball.
