Introduction to Putting

The beautiful thing about putting is that it does not require any great strength or conditioning. Putting is a skill that is learnt through developing a sound technique and through practice. Because of this anyone can become a great putter. Dedicate yourself to learning to become a great putter and watch your handicap fall!

Why is putting so important?

Par for each hole allows you two putts. However, many times in a round you will have situations where one putt is realistic. Let us look at some examples.

1. If you just miss the green but have a simple chip, you should be thinking about a chip and one putt.
2. You hit your second shot close enough to the flag for a one putt.
3. On par fives or short par fours you have the opportunity to hit some of your second or third shots within your own make able range.
4. With practice you should hole some long putts. All of these examples illustrate the numerous opportunities each round presents to take shots off your score.

Practise well and your skills on the green will become the envy of all your friends.

What is the nature putting?

Putting makes up the majority of shots played on the course. In a par round you are given 36 compared with only 14 tee shots (assuming you have 4 iron shots on the four par 3´s). For the player who averages over 90 I would expect that about half the shots you play are on the putting green. This section outlines the techniques that will allow you to putt much better and explains the mysteries of the game within a game.
