The Quarter Swing

Practising the ¼ Swing

It is very important that you practise properly. My purpose in breaking down the swing into smaller sections is so that you have a simpler programme to follow.

For each shot you should be going through the grip routine and setting up to the ball in a balanced address position. Remember keep your feet about 6 inches apart.

Keep your pace slow and you will be able to feel the rotation motion of your arms and the beginning sensations of a beautiful golf swing.

Not that you will need this section, but just so that you have it anyway I will explain how to correct some of the common errors.

Excersise to feel the motion!

Work through the following exercise to learn how the ¼ swing should feel.

Take your 7 iron and a bucket of balls (with tees) to the range.

Go through your grip routine before every shot and make plenty of practice swings in the following manner:

Take your new address position except I want you to stand with your feet only 6 inches apart.

In the takeaway you should feel that the motion of the swing is initiated by the rotation of the arms away from the ball.

Keep your left arm on your chest and rotate your forearms away from the ball so that the club moves into a position where the shaft is now parallel to the ground.

Look at the starting and finnishing position below, visualize them and then internalize them by hitting some balls.

Goals

Read through this section carefully so that you fully understand how the motion should work. When you are hitting balls, you should be able to strike down and through impact using this short arm swing as the engine for all the swing motion.

If you are doing the movement correctly you will hit a low straight shot that goes about 20-30 yards (18-27 m). It is important that you apply no more effort than is comfortable. Do not use your body as a power source. Any body motion comes purely as a reaction to the motion of the arms.
