Good Address Position in Putting

Putting_address

Checking your address position!

A successful address position combines the following points:

1. Body aligns parallel to the target line
2. Eyes are parallel to the target line and are directly over the ball
3. The putter face aims at right angles to the target line

What kind of an address position do you need for putting?

In your golf swing you are preparing to make an aggressive weight shift in order to add power to your shots. The address position for a full shot reflects your readiness to create motion.

However, in a putting stroke, you need to eliminate excess motion and so your address position must provide stability and steadiness for your body. The more balanced and stable you can become the better chance you have of holing your putt.

The body aligns parallel to the target line!

It is vital that your shoulders, hips, feet and arms are set up parallel to the target line for the following reason.

Think about your putting stroke this way: the shoulders swing the arms and the arms swing the putter. If the shoulders are not parallel to the target line then the arms will swing on a path that does not run parallel to the target line. This means that the path of the putter will also swing on an incorrect path and therefore the ball will start off line.

To correct this error you will have to either manipulate the face of the putter or you will have to swing your arms on a different line to your shoulders. Neither option is satisfactory since poor mechanics lead to inconsistency and will break down under pressure.
