Introduction to Bunker

Bunker shots represent a totally different problem from the rest of your golf game. When you hit an iron shot from the fairway you strike down on the ball first and then hit the ground. However, the same theory fails badly in the bunkers.

What I am about to tell you is the fundamental behind all of the information in these lessons. The ball leaves the sand without ever making contact with the face of your sand wedge. The ball is exploded out of the bunker on a bed of sand. A good bunker shot is hit deliberately fat.

The Bunker Shot

Although you will encounter many different lies in the bunker, you must always approach the shot in the same way. The club must accelerate down into the sand under the ball. The momentum thus created enables the sand to move the ball out onto the green.

In this lesson you will learn how to explode the club correctly into the sand so that you can remove the right amount of sand for the shot.

Once you have mastered the basic bunker shot, I will show you how to adapt your new skills to different situations. All bunker shots are played using the theory I have just discussed with you. Some are easy and some require a little magic.
