First of all, shall we take a look at the sand wedge? This club is designed to hit into the sand and then bounce off it to produce a shallow divot giving good control of the length of your shots. In contrast, a 5 iron will dig into the sand, produce a deep divot and explode a large amount of sand.
The sand wedge has a more rounded sole than the 5 iron. This is called the bounce. Make sure you have a good sand wedge with plenty of bounce. If you are ill-equipped then your success in the bunkers will be seriously handicapped.
