Whenever you are around the green you will have quite a few options as to how to play the chip shot. Always putt the ball if you can. Keeping the ball on the ground reduces the risk of disaster. You will be safe if you can keep the ball rolling on the green.
If you cannot putt the ball, pick the club and technique which will get the ball on the ground as quickly as possible and then let it roll to the flag. Only loft the ball when you do not have any other options. Obviously trying to putt the ball through a bunker is not an option!
